WHEAT MERGER A NATURAL PROGRESSION
2008-11-28
Any proposed merger between AWB Limited and South Australian Company ABB Grain Ltd should be seen as a natural consolidation trend that has been taking place in the grain industry for over 15years, PGA Western Graingrowers Chairman Leon Bradley said today.
“If the AWB/ABB merger does proceed, it will involve two of the twenty accredited exporters and it will be based on the respective shareholders and boards to assess its effectiveness in increasing their efficiency and ability to retain or expand market share.”
Mr Bradley said concerns that the proposed AWB/ABB merger would have any negative impact on the wheat industry by reducing competition is a ‘bit rich’ coming from organisations who promoted a single buyer of Australian wheat enforced through government sanctioned fear.
“It is ironic that the critics of deregulation continue to claim that any changes will have a negative impact on the industry, when for the first time growers have control of their own destiny.
