OVERSEAS INVESTMENT IS GOOD FOR WA

2008-12-15

Pastoralists and Graziers’ Association President Rob Gillam believes it would be more beneficial for Arab investors to pay a higher price for WA’s rural commodities rather than buying WA farms.

“For many years Middle East Governments and investors have been heavily subsidising farms in their own countries to grow rural commodities at prohibitive prices, when Australia can supply most of the same products at a fraction of the cost.”

The PGA President said investors from a range of countries had been investing large sums of money in WA for many years.

“There has been a steady stream of investors from South Africa, Malaysia, the US and UK and more recently even New Zealand and I find it difficult to say we should preclude WA agriculture from the benefits of overseas investment when the urban real estate market and resources sector enjoy great benefits from it.”
