ESCAS WORKING TO INCREASE ANIMAL WELFARE SAYS PGA
2015-06-10
The latest investigation into allegations of animal cruelty at an approved abattoir in Israel is a clear indication of how the live export industry is working to deliver positive animal welfare outcomes overseas according to Western Australia’s leading agricultural lobby group, the Pastoralists and Graziers Association (PGA).
“The live export industry takes animal welfare allegations very seriously and no producer or exporter will tolerate the mistreatment of their animals throughout the supply chain,” PGA Vice President and Livestock Chairman Digby Stretch said.
“The Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System (ESCAS) was established to allow for the full investigation of complaints and incidents of non compliance,” he said.
“The swiftness in how the Department of Agriculture and the industry have responded to this latest complaint in an approved abattoir in Israel shows that the ESCAS system and the live export industry are working to ensure positive animal welfare outcomes with our trading partners.”
