CARE URGED WITH RAIL FUNDING
2009-03-17
WA graingrowers are seeking an improved handling and transport system for their export harvests without consolidating the existing CBH monopoly on business and costs.
Pastoralists and Graziers’ Association Grains Chairman Leon Bradley said the campaign by CBH and WAFarmers to preserve and upgrade WA’s grain rail freight system was designed to preserve the CBH monopoly and the Co-operative’s outmoded system of charging growers on a cost plus basis.
“Future spending of public and grower funds on freight and handling grain in WA needs to be carefully considered in response to changes that have already occurred with deregulation and that are likely to occur in future.”
“We believe this probably involves a mix of spending on road and rail, with the rail component centered on fast train turnarounds,” Mr Bradley said.
